Macarthur railway station is located in the Sydney suburb of Campbelltown. It is located on the Main South Line and is served by CityRail trains of the Airport and East Hills lines of the CityRail network.[1] It is a terminus for electric trains. Diesel trains on the Southern Highlands line also stop here. The station is situated adjacent to Macarthur Square, which is the major shopping centre for the Macarthur region.

History

The station was opened in 1985,[2] when two platforms and two crossovers were provided.

Because suburban trains terminating on the main lines caused congestion to through trains, a side turnback platform at the station was added in time for the 2000 Summer Olympics.

Under the CityRail Clearways Project, Macarthur is currently being upgraded. This work is being divided into two stages. The first stage, completed in late 2010, included refurbishment of the station, a bus interchange and a new carpark. In the second stage, Macarthur is to receive a fourth platform, with the platforms arranged so that terminating trains generally use the middle two platforms, while through trains use the outer two platforms. There will also be a direct connection from Macarthur to the stabling sidings at Campbelltown.

The Southern Sydney Freight Line is being constructed to the west of the station. This will provide a dedicated freight track through southern Sydney, significantly reducing the number of through trains passing through the station, and will further boost the station's capacity to support terminating suburban passenger services.

Electrification

Electrification through the Macarthur station site was completed in 1968 as part of the Liverpool-Glenlee electrification project. Electric passenger trains terminated at Campbelltown, but freight trains could continue to Glenlee coal siding and loader (now in Mount Annan) so that electrically hauled coal trains could connect it and Port Kembla. Glenlee coal loader has closed, and electrification has been cut back to Macarthur.

Accessibility

The station is equipped with ramps, connecting the concourse with the platforms. This provided disabled access, however since the ramps were built, the standards for ramps have been tightened, requiring a less steep slope to qualify for Easy Access for wheelchairs. As a result, lifts were installed during the station's refurbishment to restore easy access to the platforms.

Platforms and services

This station is serviced by two trains per hour each way, with additional trains during weekday peak hours.

Currently, there are very few services in the morning that start from Macarthur and use the South Line route to the City Circle via Granville.

Vice versa, there are only a few weekday services that start from the City Circle and use the via Granville route to Macarthur.
